"Let each man exercise the art he knows," wrote the ancient Greek writer, Aristophanes. The art that he knew was comedy and satire through drama and poetry. Known as the "Father of Comedy," he is the only known writer of Greek comic drama who has complete examples of his work that have survived into modern times. Aristophanes would poke fun at many things. Politics and politicians were a favorite target of his. A playwright and a poet, the work of Aristophanes has been called art. His work was in the style known as "old comedy." Some consider his dramatic works as a true example of what comic drama was and should be. Like some modern comedians, Aristophanes was harsh in his satire and in his attacks on certain Athenians, especially politicians. How was Aristophanes viewed in ancient Greece for his work? How is he viewed today?
